A masterpiece could be a manifestation of a soul passing next to you and clearly going upward, somewhere skyward, sweeping beside you, and leaving behind just a breath of wind for you to feel…
Andrey Tarkovsky

“A large number of original theories have been put forward in an attempt to explain the Tarkovsky phenomenon. What are the principles which guided him? Where did he get his inspiration? What did he live through and what did he want to communicate to his audience? Would it be possible, more than 30 years after his death, to hear again the director’s voice as he talks about his life, his profession, his vocation?” – It is through these words of the son of the corypheus of cinema, himself a filmmaker and also President of the Andrey Tarkovsky International Institute, that we see the goal he has set himself in directing this documentary about his father and life mentor. The brilliant director Andrey Tarkovsky, whose works are considered masterpieces of world cinema, left us with eight films and an ever growing interest in and desire to understand his work. The documentary recounts Tarkovsky’s life and work, letting the director tell the story himself, as he shares with us his memories, his view of art and his reflections on the destiny of the artist and the meaning of human existence. Thanks to some extremely rare audio recordings, viewers are able to immerse themselves in the mysterious world of his cinematic imagery, allowing them to comprehend and reassess the work and inner life of the great director.

The film premiered as part of Venice Classics at the Venice Film Festival 2019 and has since been screened at numerous film festivals as a must see film, not only for those who admire and respect Tarkovsky’s work, but also for anyone who believes in cinema as an art.
